Escaping Single-Parent Vacation Hell to Pet-Sitting Heaven: A Mother's Journey

After my relationship concluded, I naively believed vacations as a solo mother would be easy. I soon discovered they were often extremely expensive, or seemed exclusively suitable for “traditional” families, or were so cheap that I returned home even more exhausted than when I’d left.

Early Holiday Experiences

The initial attempt, camping with friends, was fine up until I had to pack up the tent. Hours of struggling with the tent in the heat afterward, I developed a dislike for camping. Next, the adventure trip for single-parent households. The abseiling and exploring caves were brilliant, but resting in a bunk bed ruined my spine. We attempted a budget package in Tenerife, but the crowds of traditional families felt intense, and poolside conversations with other ladies fizzled out because I didn’t accompanied by a convenient partner for their husbands to chat with. An excursion to Majorca alongside a pal and her children was wonderful, but the expense was staggering.

Finding House-Sitting

Later, the previous fall, a friend asked if we could look after her pets in Devon as she attended to a ceremony. During a peaceful couple of days, we strolled along the shore, and curled up by the fire in the evening. This prompted to pet-sitting for her friend in the region, which proceeded smoothly. Inspired, I paid an yearly £99 membership to join a pet-sitting platform, through which, in exchange for looking after people’s animals, you stay at their residences without cost. Within a few days, I secured a 10-day house-sit in Sussex, looking after a retriever named Buzz while his owners traveled overseas.

Our daily strolls provided the opportunity to discover stunning natural settings.

This marked the initial assignment for strangers, but all anxiety vanished as soon as we arrived at the gorgeous four-bedroom home and encountered the gentle Buzz, who thrived for belly scratches. Each day's dog walks offered us the opportunity to venture into stunning scenic areas, and, after we came home, we were able to unwind in the garden for meaningful conversations about our preferred “Ghosts” personas from the BBC sitcom. We avoided no pricey overrated attractions to wander around – rather, we browsed bookstores, indulged to nail care, and embarked on kayak trips. I experienced more carefree and more joyful than I had in years, and noticed the connection alongside my child Polly deepen daily. I don’t hesitant to admit that I cried from joy. Life seemed achievable again.

Is Pet-Sitting Right for You?

Pet-sitting isn’t suitable for all. Certain individuals prefer zero duties on holiday apart from choosing their upcoming cocktail, are not into pets, or perhaps feel odd about sleeping in a stranger’s bed, emptying the dishwasher, and taking out their bins. However the gentle rhythm of ordinary life, with employment removed and new places to explore, suits me perfectly.

It keeps me from slipping into complete idleness, which leaves me experience twitchy and oddly hollow. Moreover, financially, house-sitting is a life-saver for a single parent. A 10-day getaway in a similar-sized property in the same area we stayed would set me back about ÂŁ2,500 on Airbnb.

An Alternative Outlook

Regarding staying in a stranger’s home, I found it enriching. Although house-sitting represents a transaction, it is equally an act of faith between unfamiliar people and creatures, that has unleashed the finest version of me – my calm, loving and measured side, overflowing with appreciation for the people and places we encounter. I’ve already lined up another four days off, caring for a whippet within verdant Surrey, and, in the coming year, I hope to try pet-sitting overseas. Due to a touch of innovative thinking, we are able to see the world from the comfort of a home – it simply happens to be another person’s.
