British Expands Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with An additional 11 Nations

Methanol alert sign

The UK Foreign Office has placed an additional eleven further countries to its travel warning register concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.

The updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after multiple high-profile events like the tragic demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a poisonous substance often used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for drinking.

While it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.

However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to notice.

Authorities' Advice for Tourists

Foreign Office minister the minister stated that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of methanol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks abroad, choose well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister advised.

"In case something feels off, like a fatigue that's way worse than normal or vision problems – contact a doctor right away."

The full roster of destinations noted as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
